Sushi

Sushi is a well known Japanese cuisine which has become increasingly popular in western society. Sushi is generally made up of nori (dried seaweed), rice and various fillings of the consumers choice. There are seven types of well known sushi including; Nigiri, small rice balls with fish, shellfish, etc. on top.  

 
Gunkan, small cups made of sushi rice and dried seaweed filled with seafood. 




Norimaki, sushi rice and fillings are rolled in dried seaweed sheets.  




 
Temakizushi, cones made of nori seaweed and filled with sushi rice, seafood and vegetables. 


 

Oshizushi, pressed sushi, in which the fish is pressed onto the sushi rice in a wooden box.  
 

 

Inarizushi is a simple and inexpensive type of sushi, in which sushi rice is filled into aburaage deep fried tofu bags. 


 
Chirashizushi is a dish in which seafood, mushroom and vegetables are spread over sushi rice.

Introduction to East Asian Foods


If you were a westerner in Sydney thirty five to forty years ago and someone asked you to name some Asian foods the odds are you would have mentioned, rice, noodles and fortune cookies. However, much has changed over the years due to globalisation and immigration and we now know that there is more to Asian foods than just noodles and rice.
